shardcore

Hypothesis.

In a culture obsessed with itself, where reality television
allows the fame hungry to grasp their fifteen minutes with
gay abandon, there appears to be an imbalance between the
desire of the minority to investigate human discourse and
the desire of the majority to watch pretty vacuous creatures
frolic in their undergarments while conversing at the level
of the epsilon semi-moron.

As a member of the interested minority, I believe that
ordinary people have something to say, they’re just not
being asked the right questions.

I hypothesise that by interviewing ordinary people, in
semi-controlled conditions i will elicit a more
accurate record of contemporary ideas, as expressed
by ‘the (wo)man on the street’, than a thousand interviews
with popstars or politicians.

Subjects

Subjects are to be selected at random, based on willingness
to participate, and the practical constraints of filming
an interview. In the initial stages this will inevitably
feature acquaintances of shardcore, though in the latter
stages it is hoped to extend this pool to other interested
and qualified individuals.

Materials

• - Panasonic NV-DS15 DV Camcorder
• - Tripod
• - Numbered pieces of paper
• - A Hat

Method

A series of questions (or conversational starting points)
are numbered. Numbers are placed into the
hat. The subject selects a number and is asked the corresponding
question. This is repeated until the pool of questions is
exhausted, or the subject elects to cease the interview. The subject
is not necessarily expected to tell the truth.

The following questions are asked of every subject:

• - What is your favourite shardcore artwork and why?
• - Recount a childhood memory.
• - Draw me something.

The subject is framed from the nose to down, close up, in
infra-red mode.

The interview footage is edited at the discretion of shardcore
and released to the public for comment.
