Having lived through the original craze in the 80s, the object has an enduring resonance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It struck me that the six coloured faces of the cube lent themselves to becoming human faces, giving the pleasing potential to scramble them up &#8211; a physical analog-algo-generative art object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shardcore.org\/shardpress2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/examplefaces.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shardcore.org\/spx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/examplefaces.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.shardcore.org\/spx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/examplefaces-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rubik\u2019s cube has 43,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible combinations, but only one solution. This struck me as an apt metaphor for the futility of Brexit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to solve a Rubik&#039;s Cube | How To Book | Thames News | 1981\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xTmZl5eCr7A?start=48&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice of who\u2019s faces to use therefore seemed obvious &#8211; the porcine faces of the architects of Brexit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The object itself is pleasingly horrific, but it needed framing, which led me to create the advert you see above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, I never learned to \u2018beat the cube\u2019 but I do remember diligently working my way through \u201cYou can do the cube\u201d by \u2018schoolboy cubemaster\u2019, Patrick Bossert. The pictoral representations of the mechanical algorithms required to move the fiendish pieces into place were a great fascination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shardcore.org\/shardpress2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/You-Can-Do-The-Cube-Book.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shardcore.org\/spx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/You-Can-Do-The-Cube-Book.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.shardcore.org\/spx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/You-Can-Do-The-Cube-Book-197x300.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rubik&#039;s Cube with Patrick Bossert A - Z of the 80s C episode\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FjrEUdsajPA?start=38&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cyou can\u2019t sort of half do it, and think you\u2019ve been successful &#8211; it really is a puzzle you either crack or you don\u2019t\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the one hand, creating the object and associated film was a pleasure, but there is also an overwhelming sense that it\u2019s perhaps too late for satire. A no-deal brexit now seems pretty much inevitable, and the millions who voted against this madness, who took to the streets in protest and valiantly tried to explain the insanity of the proposition to an increasingly vocal thinly-veiled racist \u2018will of the people\u2019 are feeling, understandably, dejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mood of the country is dark, crippled by Covid, confused and confounded by our Government, we are left, bereft of agency, in the face of the oncoming storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winter is coming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a promotional branded Rubik\u2019s Cube lying around, which I picked up, I think, at #pydata.
