acrylic on canvas, 812mm x 304mm
A new anamorphic painting for the new year. This time the German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Kant is considered a ‘hard’ philosopher by many students of the subject, and I myself remember being bewildered by his writing when I was younger. However his influence on the field is unmatched, and some have gone as far as to say his Critique of Pure Reason is the most significant volume of metaphysics and epistemology in modern philosophy.
Here’s a timelapse recording of the painting process – at the end you can see the anamorphic effect as the canvas is turned.
Love it. I bought the Critique of Pure Reason when I was 13 to impress the shop assistant in Dillons. Subsequently read it and enjoyed it, but not sure I could explain it to anyone else.
Great painting.
A request? Roger Bacon.
A very good start to 2008. Have a good one.
I remember writing a paper on Kant in college. While I wasn’t sure what I’d read – and even less sure what I’d written – I still managed to receive a B in the class. Fine work Shardcore. Once again, fine work.
I’ve a request as well: How about Charles Schultz of PEANUTS fame?
Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Bacon is a good one, but I’m thinking in pairs at the moment [I’m working on a very promising one right now, watch this space]. Bacon would perhaps work well with Ibn al-Haytham, and he’s been on my list for a while.
Or perhaps I should embrace serendipity and paint Roger Bacon with Charles Schultz..?
This requires a bit of estrogen, though I am not positive I have much to offer.
Are you taking requests now? Because considering my currect academic objectives, I’d probably request figures like Franz Boas and E. B. Tylor. And if one considers the contemporary study of religion as a science: Mircea Eliade and Max Weber.
I like the idea of requests in that they may get you to study an individual/theory that you normally wouldn’t…and it might inspire fresh concepts.
