I’ve recently gained access to Dalle2 and have been investigating its potential. Overall, I am very impressed, though somewhat irritated by their (completely understandable) policy around producing only ‘safe’ images.
One interesting feature is the ability to upload images and mark sections for ‘inpainting‘ – effectively using the AI to imagine the missing parts of the painting.
I couldn’t help but think of famous unfinished paintings, and to wonder how it might go about ‘completing them’. Most unfinished canvases contain rough guide marks to assist in the composition – the current DallE inpainting technique does not allow for this kind of assistance. However the Athenaeum portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart is largely blank canvas, allowing greater scope for the AI to do its thing.
Herewith, some possible completions.
